Police Accountability Board Application

County Executive Angela Alsobrooks just announced that applications for the Police Accountability Board are open. Here is what you need to know.

The Prince George's County Police Accountability Board (PAB) will be composed of 10 members. The County Executive will nominate five members, subject to confirmation by the County Council, and the County Council will nominate the other five. "The County Executive shall nominate, for approval by the Council, the Chair of the Board," according to the newsletter.

Responsibilities include:

  • Meet quarterly with County law enforcement agency heads and otherwise work with them to improve policing in the County

  • Appoint two civilian members to the Administrative Charging Committee and one civilian member to the administrative trial board(s)

  • Receive complaints of police misconduct filed by members of the public

  • On a quarterly basis, review the outcomes of disciplinary matters considered by charging committees

  • Submit a report to the County Executive and County Council that identifies any trends in the disciplinary process of police officers in the County and makes recommendations on changes to the policy that would improve police accountability in the County by December 31 each year

If you're interested in serving on the board, send your resume to pgcboardsvacancy@co.pg.md.us by September 9. Potential applicants must be Prince George's County residents and 21 years old and older.

Important:

"If you applied earlier this year, you do not need to reapply. Final candidates are subject to confirmation by the County Council."

Additionally: "In addition, please note that this announcement applies only to nominations that will be made by the County Executive. The nominations that will be made by the County Council are following a separate process being coordinated by the County Council."

Potential members of the PAB, cannot be:

  • An active police or law enforcement officer

  • Employees of the Prince George’s County government

  • Employees of the Office of the Sheriff of Prince George’s County

  • Employees of a municipality located within Prince George’s County

  • Employees of the Maryland State government

  • An elected official or candidate for political office within County government, State government, or municipality within Prince George’s County

  • A former police officer on the “do not call” list of the State’s Attorney
